If you’re talking about downloading to the computer rather than to the device, it could take about two minutes though it then depends on your internet connection speed. The process for transferring them from the computer to the device is cumbersome, in my opinion. I still have and use an old Sony reader but decided to try the Kindle when Sony’s e-book prices went through the roof. I’ve only had the Kindle for about two weeks, and I think I’m going to return it. It’s just easier and quicker to download Kindle books to the iPod Touch.
For what it’s worth though, you might want to wait. Sony has a new reader for pre-order right now that will use an AT&T signal and there is going to be a color e-book reader by Asus by the end of the year. Barnes & Noble will also be producing their owner device, but their e-book variety and prices leave much to be desired. Search e-book reader at Switched, Engadget and others. Also, browse online e-book stores and see if your local public library belongs to a consortium that lends e-books. Like music, the whole reader concept is dependent on the content, and of course the price of content.
If you do decide to buy the Kindle, here’s something to think about. Amazon does not repair them, which means that if you buy a refurbished one, it hasn’t failed. It was just returned because someone changed his or her mind. Refurbs are only $219 — that’s $80 off!

See here for the network coverage that comes with the Kindle:
Even if you don’t have wireless network, you can still download the books on your computer and copy them into the Kindle through USB cable. See here for official information about this (see the section “Downloading Archived Items Without a Wireless Connection”):
From my experience, I always download a book within a minute. If I’m in area without network, I’ll also use the USB method.
Finally, a good news for you that Amazon has just put a price slash on the Kindle 2, and it is now selling $100 cheaper than the price I got my Kindle… And yes, if you don’t mind the refurbished version you can get it even cheaper. So take the chance.
Hope it helps

If you’re in area not covered by wireless network, you can just buy books with your PC with internet access. Read the review here which has similar situation:
And if you want to read with the Kindle in the dark, you may get this book light (just like using book light when reading actual book):
Hope this helps.
