I've seen people on the train using the Kindle and have fantasized travelling with my Kindle, instead of lugging 2 or 3 books with me on every short trip.
Here's my honest review:
Pros:
The latest version of Kindle is more streamlined without the angles in the older version...looks wise, it's far more high tech and high class looking. It reads like a normal book, with no backlight. So you do need to be a normal lighted environment to read. It can hold up to 1500 titles, which is great for someone like me who travels frequently and doesn't have enough space at home to keep so many books. You can read the first chapter of each book free, before you decide to buy it. Now that's really fair and sure beats having to go to a bookstore and browse in the racks. In certain countries, these books are fully wrapped so you can't open the book to scan its contents! The gratification is instantaneous....if you are interested in a particular title, you can download it immediately, instead of sourcing for it, putting it on reserve etc. This means even in the middle of the night, you can get to read your book. There's no sign up fee or download fees, since it works on 3G. No need to hook up to a PC etc. it can be used by both left handers and right handers. It has long battery life and doesn't get hot easily.
Cons:
there is a one second delay when turning the page, so one has to get used to this. You can't really use it for research purposes or for school...unlike normal books, where you can put post it notes and flip across chapters, this is not possible with the Kindle. Hence it's good only for the casual reader. it only reads Kindle files and PDFs. Although it can read other formats like doc., word etc, you will need to go through Amazon who will convert it at a small fee ( 10 cents per attachment) and have it emailed to you. Also, you can't share your book with others, even if they own the Kindle. It's bottom heavy, so if you like to read in bed, make sure you don't drop it on your head! If you are like holding a real book in your hands and the idea of browsing at bookstores, then the Kindle is not for you.
All in all, it's a worthwhile investment!
