I do not use the Kindle but rather use my Iphone Kindle app which was free and download ebooks for kindle to the iphone. I would not personally pay all that money for an E-book reader as it seems very pointless. You can easily get the same thing for your mobile phone or PC for free rather than a few hundered dollars, and get a free coverter to convert to the correct format display.

I have a Kindle and am a major book lover. I don’t think the Kindle would replace books- at least not for me. One can get books for free from the library system and most library systems let a person request books ahead of time in a sort of queue arrangement.

But here are the pros of having a Kindle:

    1) holds many books and weighs a lot less than carrying a dozen books around such as some people (like me!) might do for a major trip somewhere.

    2) Some people (not me) don’t like libraries and prefer to purchase books and purchase them brand new. A Kindle book price is cheaper than a hard cover book price and there’s no shipping and handling. Many titles are available via Amazon Kindle.

    3) the Classics are public domain and can be downloaded into a Kindle device even if not through Amazon- and you can find free copies. In addition to Amazon’s own software, Kindle supports mobi and txt files and some other ones. If the book you find is in PDF format, there are programs that will convert it to txt. I have loaded a number of classics to my Kindle, free of charge. Doesn’t take up any room at all.

    4) Some libraries are starting to have ebooks. I was told by mine that it wouldn’t be compatible with a Kindle but would be with other ebook readers. However, some of that library’s ebooks are in mobi format – which can be read in a Kindle-or in PDF which I can convert. Only downside- at least with my library- is that they have a limited number of ebooks at this point.

    5) Kindles are very user friendly. Easy to figure out how to use one even without the manual that is contained in the Kindle’s memory. It also has a built in dictionary. I just wish it had a backlight. You can change the font and it’s very easy to read.

I think that for a real book lover, it’s good as an additional thing. They are very expensive though. 389.00 (USD) for the regular one and 489.00 for the newer bigger one. But there are advantages to having one, particularly for those who like to read a lot of classics, or who like to travel or who tend to purchase books rather than borrow them from the library. I get the idea about just having it be a cellphone app, but you get a much smaller screen that way, I believe, and might not be as much fun to read it.

Below is a few of the pros and cons of portable ebook readers like the Amazon Kindle compared to good ‘ol fasioned books.

I personally hated having to move my entire book collection with me every time I moved, so this was the primary reason for me buying a Kindle.

    ————–
    Pros:
    ————–
    * Text can be searched automatically and cross-referenced using hyperlinks.

    * A single e-book reader containing several books is easier to carry around (less weight and volume) than the same books (or sometimes even a single book) in printed form. Even hundreds or thousands of books may be stored on the same device. Using removable media even more can be carried around easily.

    * At a fixed place such as at home it can be an advantage that an e-book collection requires very little space.

    * Mobile availability of e-books may be provided for users with a mobile data connection, so that these e-books need not be carried around.

    * E-books can allow non-permanent highlighting and annotation.

    * Font size and font face can be adjusted.

    * Depending on the device an e-book may be readable in low light or even total darkness.

    * An e-book can automatically open at the last read page.

    * While an e-book reader costs much more than one book, the electronic texts are generally cheaper. Moreover, a great share of books are available for free, without any charge at all.

    * Text-to-speech software can be used to convert e-books to audio books automatically.

    * An e-book can be offered indefinitely, without ever going “out of print”.

    * It is easier for authors to self-publish e-books.

    * The production of e-books does not consume paper, ink, etc.

    ————–
    Cons:
    ————–
    * A small book is easier to carry around than a typical e-book reader.

    * E-book readers require electrical power; in the case of mobile use, the battery can get exhausted.

    * E-book readers are more fragile than paper books and more susceptible to physical damage.

    * E-book readers can malfunction and e-books can be damaged due to faults in hardware or software.

    * E-book readers are more likely to be stolen than paper books.

    * Depending on the device an e-book may be difficult to read in bright sunlight.

    * Most publishers don’t produce the e-book equivalent of their printed books. In other cases the product quality is lower or it is released later.

    * If an e-book device is stolen, lost, or broken beyond repair, all e-books stored on the device may be lost. This can be avoided by backup either on another device or by the e-book provider.

    * Screen resolution of reading devices may be lower than actual paper.

    * Some books available as e-book cannot be read on some e-book readers because they are not supplied in a format those readers allow.

    * While printed books remain readable for ages, changing technologies and less durable electronic storage media require e-books to be copied to a new carrier after some years.

    * E-book readers require various substances to produce, and have to be disposed of properly for environmental reasons.

Guess you are considering to buy a Kindle. I’ll say the Kindle is beneficial for being a portable reader, and to organize the books all in one place. You may read this review, as it outlines quite a lot of benefits of the device. If it convinces you then go and get it, otherwise just forget about it.
