Okay, I get that you can buy the Kindle for 300 something and that there are over millions of books that you can download, but what about the books that you already own. Can you just put it into the kindle or do you need to buy them again.
Is the Amazon website the only place where you can buy this? And is there anything else that I need to know about it?

Electronic books you can put on the Kindle unless it is not supported. Some you have to convert first, like PDFs. The manual explains more about that.
That said, if you mean actual, physical, printed books, you will have to buy the electronic copy separately. Amazon is the main store and the only place I know of where you can get the Kindle, but there is other sites where you can download books for free and in a format Amazon can recognize, like Project Gutenberg and ManyBooks.net.
If you want more general information and not a specific question about the Kindle (if so, contact me), just check out the main page and reviews on Amazon.
By the way, if you get the optional cover and 2 days shipping, it comes out to be 401 and some cents.

Yes, you can copy the books to your Kindle if they are in electronic format.
For things you need to know about Kindle 2, I’ll suggest you to check some review. Here is a good one:
And the customer review on Amazon is the best place you can check out. They are opinions from unbiased users, and sorted according to which review most people find helpful with. Read one or two of them and you should be able to make up your decision:

Yes, Amazon is the only place you can order the Kindle 2. Right now they do not accept order outside United States, so I know some people outside United States will get from their friends here.
If the books you originally own is one of the supported formats like PDF or Word then you can convert them to Kindle format for free and copy to the Kindle. Here is an extract from the Kindle page on how this works. The sales page and actual customer review should give every thing you need to know already.

Personal Documents
Kindle makes it easy to take your personal documents with you, eliminating the need to print. Each Kindle has a unique and customizable e-mail address. You can set your unique email address on your Manage Your Kindle page. This allows you and your approved contacts to e-mail Word, PDF documents, and pictures wirelessly to your Kindle for a small per document fee–currently only 10ยข per document. Kindle supports wireless delivery of unprotected Microsoft Word, PDF, HTML, TXT, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, PRC and MOBI files.
You can email your PDFs wirelessly to your Kindle. Due to PDF’s fixed layout format, some complex PDF files may not format correctly on your Kindle.
If you are not in a wireless area or would like to avoid the fee, you can send attachments to “name”@free.kindle.com to be converted and e-mailed to your computer at the e-mail address associated with your Amazon.com account login. You can then transfer the document to your Kindle using your USB connection. For example, if your Kindle email address is, send your attachments to.
