Is the Amazon Kindle a good system?

kindle40 Is the Amazon Kindle a good system?
As an early birthday present, my grandfather has offered to get me an Amazon Kindle. Knowing how much I like read, he knew when he made the offer that it would be something that I would be interested in. Now my question is, is the Amazon Kindle a good system?

The thing I'm concerned about mostly is it's readability. Is it easier to read than a book? Exactly the same? Does anyone find that it distracts you from enjoying the book?

How durable is it? With a book, I can leave it in a hot car for three months, leave it in a cold car for five months, drop it in a puddle, throw it in my bag, read with it in the bathtub, and let my friends borrow it and most of the time, my book is going to be a least readable. With a Kindle, could I do any of those things with it? If a book gets ruined, then it might be $20 to replace it, depending on the book. But if a Kindle gets ruined, then that's a lot of money to replace it.

I'm also concerned with the price of the books. How much do books actually cost? Is the book cheaper if it's not a new release? Are all books that you could buy in a bookstore available through the Kindle?

Lastly, do you recommend it? Do you find yourself spending large amounts of money on books you never read? Can you take it everywhere with you? Does it come with a warranty? If you read it on the beach, does sand get stuck in it? What;''s your favorite thing about the Kindle? Your least favorite thing?

I'm asking a lot of questions here, but I just want to make sure that if I ask my grandfather to get me this expensive thing, that I can actually use, like it, and maintain it. If I asked too many questions, just tell me what you like/ don't like about the Kindle. And if there is a better hand held digital reader out there, then please, let me know!

That’s really a lot of questions, let me try to answer…

There is no need for you to find other digital readers. The Kindle is already the best :)

I own the Kindle 2, so let me give you some of my opinions. I’ve to say I love it! I think I’ve read over 20 books with my Kindle, no glitches so far!

I’m an avid reader and at the beginning I missed a bit on the feeling of reading books. But now I love to hold the Kindle, the e-ink seems to work very well, it is really like reading books… Now I often read with the Kindle for several hours but I don’t feel tired… And now I prefer to keep and organize all my books on my Kindle rather than organizing all the physical books, it is really much more convenient.

Right now Amazon provides over 320,000 books available in Kindle format, and the number is kept on increasing (it is only 270,000 books when I got my Kindle a few months ago). Not all books available, but I think most popular books could be found. Moreover, you can click on a link on actual book in paper version on Amazon to ask the publisher to make the book available for the Kindle. When there are enough people clicking the link, it usually works. And you can always check the list of books available here:

And Kindle books are cheaper than that of actual books, many new books are sold at $9.99 or below. Amazon also provides quite a lot of free or very cheap books. I’ve previously bookmarked a good article talking about this:

I love my Kindle because it has helped me improve a lot on my efficiency and utilize my time. Before I owned the Kindle, waiting time like when I’m waiting for friends or waiting for shuttle bus or some thing like that is simply wasted. Now I just need to bring the Kindle 2 along with me. Another thing I like the most is the text-to-speech function, which means I can “read” books without even holding or looking at the Kindle. Now I like to use this function when I’ve myself busy on some boring things, say when I’m on the step machine or doing some housework…

I remember I read this review when I decide to buy the Kindle 2:

I don’t have any worry about breaking the Kindle, because I always put it in my bag and take it out only when I want to read. But if you want to be more secure, you can consider to buy the warranty for your Kindle. You don’t need to worry about breaking it within the 2 years then:

    Hope it helps.

Good for you. You know, Amazon just announced to chop the price of the Kindle 2 for $60. It is really a good chance for you to get it now.

I love my Kindle 2 very much. If you are thinking of buying one, I’ll say get it and you won’t regret. Since Amazon provide books for the Kindle cheaper than actual books (even for new books), it has saved me quite a lot of money. Right now I’ve read over 10 books with the Kindle, and I really like the idea that I can bring and store all the books with the handy device. Besides, it uses the e-ink technology, so even I read with the device for long hours, I don’t feel tired. My only complaint is the white case, right now all the Kindles are in white color… I think it will be cool if I can have a black or deep blue color Kindle ;)

I’ll suggest you to read this review too, it outlines quite a lot of benefits of the Kindle:

I’ve got the 2 years warranty for my Kindle, so I can now use it without any worry of breaking it. I don’t think there is much chance for me to break it though… May be you can get the Kindle first, and consider to buy the warranty some time later after using and feeling your Kindle.

Of course, you should buy the cover to protect your Kindle, it’ll be much better.

    Hope this helps.

I think the Amazon Kindle is really good, and worth to buy especially after a price cut for the Kindle 2. I’ve many friends owned the Kindle 2, and reading on the screen is really like reading on real books. It is so handy to look up for dictionary, dropping notes, and keeping all books all in one device.

I’ll recommend you to read this user review if you’re getting the Kindle. It is the best one I’ve ever read:

Hope it helps you making up the decision.

Yes, it is definitely a good system. It worths the price, especially after the price drop. It will not be long for the money saved on books to cover the cost of the Kindle.

There is an excellent review here from a Kindle owner:
